Andrew Smith - Violin

Andrew Smith studied at the Royal Academy of Music, UK where his teachers included Erich Gruenberg, OBE and Emanuel Hurwitz, CBE.  He went on to his Doctorate in Violin Performance at the Hartt School, USA studying with Ida Kavafian, Artist in Residence at the Lincoln Center and as Assistant to the Grammy winning, Emerson String Quartet. In 1992 he was appointed Concertmaster of the Orquestra da Norte, Portugal and in the same year he made his London debut at the South Bank Centre. In his early twenties he played as Concertmaster of numerous orchestras in Europe before moving to the US where he now lives with his wife, cellist Andrea Mills. As a concertmaster and solo violinist he has been fortunate to work with such eminent conductors and composers as Sir Colin Davis, Vaclav Neumann, Sir Simon Rattle, Helmut Rilling, John Corigliano, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Gunther Schuller, Hans Werner Henze, and Sir Michael Tippet and has premiered much new music in the UK and US. Now living in Connecticut, he is frequently invited as guest concertmaster of orchestras in the Mid-West and East Coast and maintains a career as a teacher and solo artist.

As a soloist Andrew has performed with orchestras in England, Portugal, Italy, China and the United States, appearing in television and radio broadcasts and on video. Recent concerto appearances include concerts in Connecticut, Chicago, Indianapolis, Northwest Indiana and Southwest Michigan and a recent live broadcast for Chicago Public Radio from Symphony Hall. He has appeared at such venues as the British Embassy in Paris, St Martin-in-the-Fields, London, the British Music Information Centre, London, Chicago Cultural Center, and Chicago Symphony Hall. As a guest artist he has appeared in concert for the American Liszt Society, the Dame Myra Hess Series, the US Coast Guard, Artists Against Aids and was recently appointed "Cultural Artist" for southern Connecticut. His recording of the Glazunov Concerto was recently released on the VUCA label.

Andrew has a keen interest in contemporary music having performed with such groups as Double Image, The Hawksmoor Music Project, and London Musici, at the 1996 Edinburgh International Festival. He was a founding member of the new music group the Rubicon Ensemble and served as its Artistic Director between 1990 and 1995. In 1999 he become director of The Copland Century, a Connecticut based Arts festival celebrating the birth of Aaron Copland. Much in demand as an educator and teacher he is Director of the Stamford International Music Festival, UK and runs the specialist music school, the Suzuki Music School of Westport, CT. He has taught at many universities and been invited to give violin master classes at the Shanghai Conservatory, State University of New York, San Francisco State University, Andrews University, the Hartt School and has twice appeared as guest artist for the American String Teachers Association.
