The Hammig String Quartet is named after a German violin maker who happened to have made the violin belonging to a founder member of the quartet. Although he hasn't played with the group for many years, the name of his violin has stayed.
First formed in 1989, the quartet is based in London, and all its members pursue their own musical careers alongside the quartet. Their main focus is giving interesting and informative recitals and in recent years they have performed all over the UK.
Their repertoire is chosen carefully each year and they include a mixture of well known and less mainstream pieces. For a complete recital repertoire list see below.
Occasionally the Hammig String Quartet invites guest players to make up quintets, and they have worked in the past with clarinet, double bass, flute, guitar, piano, trumpet and a second viola.
The quartet plays regularly at the St George's Arts Festival in their home locality in Beckenham. In 2001 they visited Leichlingen, Germany where they performed Walton's Quartet in A minor and in February 2003 returned there with the Dvorak Bass Quintet. Other regular venues include The Usher Art Gallery Lincoln, The Colour House Theatre at Merton Abbey Mills and St Mary's Church Henley. The quartet makes regular appearances with UK music Clubs and and has recently performed at Seaton, Ruthin, Welshpool, Dolgellau and Dwyor.
All the members of the quartet are experienced teachers, and have been involved with chamber music coaching individually for many years. The quartet has recently been involved in coaching talented young musicians in chamber groups in Enfield, and they have presented short musical demonstrations to primary schools in Devon.
They can offer attractive and informative recitals to demonstrate stringed instruments to young children and encourage interest in learning to play. For children who already play, they can offer coaching at all levels from beginners to advanced, and they are always willing to provide new repertoire for a 'chamber music day' or coach existing ensembles to prepare for their own performances.
